Website →Jeep or side-by-side?
- Going to Telluride? Rent a Jeep. Black Bear Pass and Imogene Pass both come down into Telluride, and unlicensed side-by-sides can't drive its streets. A plated Jeep can drive through town and back to Ouray on the highway. (source)
- A side-by-side can't leave from your hotel. Unlicensed off-highway vehicles aren't allowed on Ouray's streets or on US 550. Ask the shop to deliver it to the trailhead, or unload at the Horseshoe Bend staging lot just south of town. (source)
- Side-by-sides are open to the weather. Afternoon storms are common up high in summer. Bring a rain layer, and plan to be off the passes by early afternoon.
Ask before you book
- Which trails can I take it on? Tell the shop your plan, especially if it includes Black Bear Pass, and ask whether the rental is allowed there.
- Who can drive? Age rules vary by shop. Switzerland of America, for example, requires drivers to be 25 or older.
- Is the Colorado OHV permit included? Side-by-sides need a Colorado off-highway vehicle permit on the trail. Ask whether the rental has one. (source)
- Can they deliver to the trailhead? It saves you from trailering a side-by-side you don't own.
